Born in Moose Factory and raised in the Cree community of Chisasibi, Ernest Webb has worked in communications for most of his adult life. In the early 80s, he joined the fledging Cree Radio Network started by the James Bay Cree Communications Society in Mistissini, where he worked as an editor/producer. In 1986, he moved to Montreal and joined CBC North as announcer/producer where he produced and hosted a weekly elders show, along with CBC North's flagship daily morning show "Winschgaoug".
In 1993, along with William Nicholls and Catherine Bainbridge, he founded Beesum Communications, publishers of The Nation, an award-winning news and cultural magazine, serving the James Bay Cree communities in Quebec and Ontario.
Webb co-directed his first film Andrew's Song, a full-length Cree documentary produced by Beesum in 1995. In 2001 he co-founded Rezolution Pictures International and during the same year won the Telefilm Canada/APTN Award for The Best Aboriginal Language Documentary for his film Cree Spoken Here that he produced as well as wrote and directed with Neil Diamond.
Webb also produced and co-wrote and co-directed three seasons of Dab Iyiyuu / Absolutely Cree. The sixteen episodes feature wilderness skills, stories, and legends of Cree elder couples and has been airing on APTN since 2003.
He produced and co-wrote One More River, a two-part documentary special for APTN about the controversial Cree decision to allow more dams on their land. One More River aired on APTN in the winter of 2005 and was nominated for the prestigious Donald Brittain Award for social issue documentaries at the Geminis. It won the 2004; Best Documentary Award at the Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Québecois.
As producer, Webb completed production on Heavy Metal: A Mining Disaster in Northern Quebec, about the fate of the Ouje-Bougoumou Cree who recently discovered that their land and water is contaminated with toxic mining waste, also which aired in the winter of 2004 on APTN. Heavy Metal won the 2004; Rigoberta Manchu Prize at Montreal's First Nations Festival.
In 2006-2007, Webb co-created and executive produced the eight-part comedy series Moose TV for Showcase. He also executive produced the six part documentary series Rez Rides (following the antics of a Mohawk custom garage). In the summer of 2007, Rez Rides went into production for its second season and Webb began working on the historical docu-drama The Last Explorer, which he is co-writing and co-directing with Neil Diamond for APTN. The Last Explorer is set to shoot in the fall of 2007.
